EAT: MARY EATS CAKE, BRUNSWICK
I’ve come to discover with age and more dining adventures under the belt that taste-bud changing moments are fewer and farther in between. But I got to experience one such moment recently with Mary Eats Cakes and their scones. So incredibly perfect was the texture and taste of the scone that it truly highlighted the disparity between this and previous ‘perfect scone’ encounters, redefining what I previously thought was ‘fluffy and light’. It was almost cake-y, spongy light but with that crusty exterior you want in a good scone. To say it was the best scone I’ve ever tried would not be stretch. And better yet, they do bottomless scones here (alongside bottomless drink options), so be sure to bring your stretchy pants in anticipation and preparation. The fancy high tea also comes with a cheese board in addition to the high tea spread, so even more reason to bring those stretchy pants.
As for the rest of the high tea spread, nothing beats having *the best scone ever* experience but the savouries did also stack up. The sandwiches were fresh (none of that dry bread staleness) and the fillings beautifully balanced. Both the homemade shepherd’s pie and mushroom+goats cheese arancini also left quite the tasty impressions. Flavoursome and comforting on a cold wintery day. We didn’t quite make it to the sweets (and this was despite having ONLY one scone) but with takeaway as an option, the hubby and I tucked into these a day later. Again, all were tasty and I was particularly enamoured with the zesty and tangy profile captured in the lemon tart, heightened by a subtle salty contrast.
Fans of scones, fans of high tea, I cannot highly recommend enough a visit (or several) to Mary Eats Cake. The high tea spread was absolutely faultless and with bottomless scones and drinks available, there’s also immense bang for buck value.
