EAT: LUKUMADES, WEST MELBOURNE
When it comes to fresh donuts, I’ve always had a soft spot for a piping hot one filled with jam. Much to my detriment at times when I go in for that first bite and end up with a burnt tongue. Patience just isn’t my virtue when it comes to a hot jam donut, especially if it has been a long time since my last one. But after recently trying Lukumades for the first time on National Donut Day a while ago, I can add them to my favourites list right there next to those hot jam donuts. Pssst, Lukumades also do a mean hot jam donut, but there are also more exciting (and equally tasty) options on the menu. Melted Biscoff, Bueno, Twix and Snickers to name a tasty few. With so many delectable sounding options, it’s a good thing that they recently introduced a half and half dozen option.
I couldn’t say no to the jam it strawberry jam filled donuts rolled in cinnamon sugar (surprise, surprise). Simple perfection, it’s a classic for excellent reason. The texture of the donut balls was also spot on; a crispy exterior and a light doughy interior. Choosing flavour number two had me umm’ing and err’ing for a while longer, and I finally decided on the dark delight melted dark chocolate with crushed pistachios. The flavour sounded relatively tame compared to their other options (I’ll be going back for some of those other ones some day soon if we ever find ourselves out of lockdown), but given that the jammy options are usually quite sweet, I thought the dark chocolate would be a good balancing flavour. The chocolate still culminated in a rich flavour but the subtle bitterness from the dark chocolate and the pistachios both helped rein in the decadence.
If you’re a donut fan, Lukumades is definitely one to try. Over and over again until you make your way through the entire menu!
At the time of writing this review and the Victoria’s covid stage four restrictions, Lukumades (West Melbourne, Carlton and Windsor) remain open for pre-order, takeaway and delivery.
