EAT: SANKRANTI FOOTSCRAY // ZOMATO TAKEAWAY
It only took 6 months of recovery and avoidance post-India travels, but my taste buds were finally ready for another Indian feast again. And what better way to reintroduce my palate than with some takeout from a local favourite down the road, Sankranti, for an easy weekday dinner. Making things even easier, I was able to sort out ordering and contactless payment through the recently-launched Zomato Takeaway on the app. Once the order and payment is confirmed, which took next to no time, a collection time is then sent through. Easy peasy, no? As a bonus for the hard hit hospitality industry, there is absolutely no commission fees for venues for the first three months. Check out the Zomato app now to see if your favourite restaurant is operating through Zomato Takeaway, with the list of participating venues constantly growing.
Back to our takeaway spread from Sankranti. We ordered some street food favourites to whet our appetites before moving onto the main event - some curries with garlic naan. Or so we had planned. With everything looking AND smelling so inviting, we just had to load up our plates and tuck into everything at once. Samosas, along with butter chicken, are two must-orders for me whenever we have Indian food. Beautiful crunchy and golden pastry filled with potatoes and a fragrant spice, what’s not to love? New to this order was some papri chaat, something that I tried for the first time in India and had immediately won over my taste buds. Another street food classic (although without iron guts, I only dared to try this dish from our 4 star hotel buffet spread), chaat is comprised of a crispy fried pastry base, loaded with potatoes and a blend of sweet (tamarind?), spicy and fragrant sauces. Indian style loaded chips meets nachos territory, utterly delicious. Butter chicken is my go-to when it comes to Indian curries - I enjoy the milder hit of spice and the sweeter flavour profile compared to other curries. But with every encounter, I’m slowly learning to broaden my options and try new dishes. Alongside an order of butter chicken, of course. We tried the gutti vankaya eggplant curry - the overall flavour was a lot heavier on the spice front compared to the butter chicken. No surprises there but it wasn’t quite to my liking, and I found myself spooning more butter chicken between bites of the eggplant curry for relief. The eggplant pieces themselves were spot on, silky and tender, and were easily my favourite bits of the curry.
All in all, pretty stoked with our meal from Sankranti and no signs of… curry fatigue, for lack of a better word, post-meal. Which is something that only happens after a great Indian meal.
