EAT: TOKOSAN, PRAHRAN

Turns out there’s a whole new world of eateries to explore on the other side of town, located a mere stone’s throw from the new work place. Work perks, am I right? If only…

Anyhow, my taste buds and I are certainly enjoying the change in scenery. We recently checked out Prahran’s Tokosan after work one evening for a tasty, modern Japanese spread. Tokosan doesn’t hold back when it comes to the presentation front; the interior decor is stunningly vibrant and the plating of their food is also extremely eye-catching. Cue the stomach growls. So how does the actual taste stack up? There are representations of Japanese flavours and elements in each of the dishes, and the kitchen team do well to make sure that the tweaks and fusion elements compliment these base flavours. Our favourite picks included the silky pieces of eggplant dressed in a gorgeously sweet miso glaze, and seared tuna tataki with fragrant yuzu, ponzu and truffle. For something slightly more substantial, the airy light baos, which sandwich fillings like a crispy chicken katsu or cheeseburger-esque wagyu beef, make a great option.

Sweet eggplant miso - with nori, chilli and sesame seeds.

Katsu chicken bao - with cheese, lettuce, aioli, tommy sauce and chilli.

Wagyu beef bao - with cheese, pickles, onion, lettuce, mustard and tommy sauce.

Salmon roll - with avocado.

Seared tuna tataki - with yuzu, ponzu and truffle.
