EAT: GABRIEL CAFE, FITZROY

For every blogger, there comes a time or an event when you forget to bring the camera. In my case, I had unfortunately repeated a past mistake of leaving behind the battery at home. Or fortunately perhaps, as it meant a return trip to Gabriel Cafe some weeks later to rectify my mistake :)

During visit number one, I took the brunch path most travelled (at least for myself anyway) and opted for the avo. Their version included a nutty dukkah, punchy feta and zesty lemon that ensured a well balanced and fragrant turn out of flavours. It was tempting to re-order the same dish again during visit number two, but then I laid my eyes on a special of the week: sweet and sour Korean rice cakes with provolone cheese, crispy kale, poached egg and roti. The sauce base was tangy sweet and paired beautifully with the cheese and crispy kale. No boring bites here, with every spoonful leaving you wanting just a little bit more. At least until you hit the wall; those looking for a filling breakfast will be pleased with both the roti AND Korean Tteokbokki rice cakes.

Sriracha scrambled eggs - with feta, spring onions and fresh herbs on sourdough toast.

Crisp saganaki - with poached eggs, smoked salmon, avocado, kasundi, dukkah, lemon and rocket.
