EAT: COUNTER, NORTH MELBOURNE [CLOSED]

Once upon a time when North Melbourne was within a 10 minute walk from work, I often frequented Counter for a quick coffee or bite of lunch.

Located across the road from the super popular Auction Rooms, Counter offered the same coffee, sans queues. Their selection of sandwiches and takeaway goodies made for an easy lunch option, with the added perk of usually being delicious. These days, the 15 - 20 minute walk (depending on walking shoes) is a tad a trickier to manage and so visits to Counter now take place on the rarest of occasions.

During my most recent visit, it was their tofu brioche roll that wowed my tastebuds. Just the way I like it when it comes to brioche, the bun was airy light and buttery but not too overwhelming to stomach. The tofu was coated in a sweet marinade that oozed plenty of flavour, and was rounded out nicely by the accompanying slaw and the tang of the pickled carrots. Almost like a banh mi bread roll. Somewhat. But definitely just as tasty.

Counter, we will meet again. The tofu roll I suspect will be gone but going by visits that have taken place previously, the great lunch selections will continue to roll on in. And let's not forget about the excellent coffee.
