EAT: SHORT STRAW, HAWTHORN
If you’re anything like me and not a morning person, then you probably feel more awake and human (a non-cranky one at that) only after a nice cup of coffee (come at me, caffeine!), exercise, and/or a fresh, tasty meal… For those of you within a reasonable trek to the Hawthorn area, Short Straw will tick the boxes when it comes to coffee and a good breakfast/brunch feed. All that colour they pack into their dishes will really make your eyes pop (wakey, wakey!) while the tasty flavours will wake your taste buds if the coffee hasn’t already done so yet. Double whammy guaranteed to prepare you for the day… smile on face and all!
My dining companion opted for the poke bowl, loaded to the brim with freshness and plump slices of salmon. The amount of salmon, along with the overall portion size of the dish, is quite generous. Not quite in the mood for anything in particular, I decided to choose the brekkie board (which normally comes with a mini croissant but they had run out on the day of our visit) with an added side of crispy fried halloumi. A great option for anyone after a little bit of this and that, the indecisive or the super hungry, the brekkie board is the way to go, covering all bases with savoury and sweet. There’s a crispy slice of toast topped with a zesty and refreshing mound of smashed avo+salty feta, light buttery french toast fingers drizzled in a creamy custard and fresh strawberries, washed down with some fresh OJ. Don’t forget the coffee. Again, another generously sized dish and we share the french toast fingers as dessert.
Poke bowl - brown & black rice with cured sesame seed salmon, sweet corn, radish, pickled onion, edamame, avocado, wakame & ponzu dressing.
Brekkie board - brioche french toast sliders with strawberries, vanilla custard; one slice of toasted sourdough topped with smashed avocado and feta; plain croissant; and organic orange juice. [With an added side of halloumi]
