EAT: HEALTHY SELF CO, YARRAVILLE
With home being Footscray for the time being, I find myself slowly working my way through the cafes in the neighbouring Seddon and Yarraville suburbs. And what better time to visit Yarraville's HealThy Self Co than after a morning sweat session at the nearby pilates studio.
We ordered a savoury and sweet dish to share, and with my preference for savoury over sweet, veggies first with the Paleo Love Stack. Much like a vegetarian big breakfast, the dish had several veggie components; roasted garlic mushroom, root veggie hash, sautéed spinach, and poached eggs served on a house made paleo nut and seed loaf. A hearty blend of potato and veggies with a gentle fried char, it was love at first bite when it came to the veggie hash. Highly moreish and perfect for winter. The paleo loaf on the other hand was a bit too dry and nutty for my liking, relying on the other components to soften its texture and flavour.
Sweet came in the form of the peanut butter and jelly pancake special available on the week of our visit. Gluten and dairy free, the pancakes tasted a whole lot healthier and wholesome compared to my usual homemade pancake mix. Their's was paired with a more-tart-than-sweet house made raspberry chia jam and a nutty peanut butter component. With the sweetest thing on the plate being the slices of banana, it's safe to say that this was a very healthy take on pancakes.
While there were some misses encountered with both plates, the hits were actually quite delicious and satisfying. With there being some other dishes that had also caught my eye whilst perusing the menu, another visit, perhaps after a workout, is likely.
