EAT: DEXTER, PRESTON

Two words: meat donut. Yes, you read correctly. It's a thing, and it's utterly delicious.

Many Melburnians will immediately think of Dexter Melbourne when they hear the words meat donut. The folks behind the Preston eatery were the one of first to dabble in the savoury donut combo, but it is something that's starting to pop up quite a bit in eateries across Melbourne. But when it comes to the one and only original, it's pretty hard to beat the perfectly balanced sweet and savoury notes captured in this fried delight. Upon initial inspection, I was so sure that the sugary cinnamon dusting would not work with the cheesy, oh so tender meaty filling but it worked a treat. To say I ate my words quite literally would be apt.

On the other end of the meaty spectrum at the vegetarian end, the Kentucky fried cauliflower bites also stood out as spectacular. Crispy coated perfection, with a highly addictive spice mixed through. The meats and buns were also well executed but didn't quite reach the same soaring heights set by the entree dishes. Our meat plate was accompanied by a bone marrow mash that not only wowed with its silky smooth texture but also its rich indulgent flavour. Heavenly. It goes without saying that this is also a must order.

Whether you're a big carnivore at heart or even the polar opposite, a visit to Dexter Melbourne is highly recommended, ranking amongst my top 10 food adventures last year.
