EAT: 3 GRAINS - ROMAN ARTISAN PIZZA, WILLIAMSTOWN

When it comes to the pizzas at 3 GRAINS Roman Artisan Pizza Williamstown, it not just the rectangular Roman-style shape that distinguishes them from other pizzerias in Melbourne but also their pizza dough composition and leavening process making for a healthier pizza experience overall (music to my ears). And with absolutely no compromise on taste! I’m a big fan of the wood-fired style pizzas, and 3 GRAINS’ were up there with the best I’ve tried in Melbourne.

Their dough is created with spelt, wholewheat and white flour, and left aside to leaven for 3 days before appearing on a serving platter. This allows the fermentation process to take place outside of the gut, minimising any bloating effects post-consumption. As the hubby so pointed out: “this means you can eat more!” To some extent, anyway, if you happen to be in possession of a big appetite.

We kicked off our meal with the Tagliere Misto; essentially a taste of things to come with a serving of flatbread (a naked pizza base), fresh cured meats and cheeses including a serving of creamy, silky buffalo mozzarella. Not expecting such a big serving size for the entree, we had also ordered two pizzas; roasted eggplant Melanzane and a Bufala Margherita. The pizzas were light and crispy with a gorgeous wood-fired char, and the simplicity of ingredients on top allowed the base to soar alongside the toppings. Speaking of, these were incredibly fresh and tasty, particularly the margherita pizza with its creamy, oozy Bufala mozzarella. It’s often a margherita pizza that will make or break a pizza dining experience for me, and 3 GRAINS’ version won me over from the get go. And healthier than others to boot! Needless to say, a return visit is on the cards.
