RECIPE: PIZZA DOUGH APPLE CINNAMON ROLL

If you’re someone who frequents the kitchen as a cook (and not someone like my partner who only steps foot into this area to raid the fridge or pantry), then a Dutch oven is something you should definitely have in your arsenal. I’m fairly late to the game as I only got my hands on one last year to make a no-knead bread recipe (did you even experience lockdown if you didn’t bake at least one loaf of bread?) but it turns out there’s so much more you can do with a Dutch oven.

Look no further than the Crumble range for a reliable Dutch oven at an affordable price point compared to some other brands. There’s so much versatility in what you can do with a Dutch oven - bake, roast, slow cook, fry, cook… one of my favourite features is being able to go straight from stovetop to oven without needing to switch cookware! Another perk (yes, there are so many!) is the even distribution of heat and the high levels of heat that can be reached (oven safe up to 260 C), imparting an excellent crust for bread and pizza doughs. The benefits of a Crumble oven also extend beyond functionality; thanks to their partnership with Foodbank Australia, each Dutch oven purchase provides 5 meals to support those facing hardships. So what are you waiting for? The cherry on top, perhaps? You can try before you buy with a 30 day home trail.

I decided to christen my Crumble Dutch oven with an easy apple and cinnamon roll created with store-bought pizza dough. With something like half the country in lockdown at the moment, many of us are in need of some comfort without needing to pull out all the stops. Tick and tick. This recipe requires very few ingredients, no mucking around with yeast and minimal effort.

PIZZA DOUGH APPLE CINNAMON ROLL

INGREDIENTS

  • 400 g store-bought pizza dough, at room temperature

  • plain flour for rolling (I used ~1/2 cup)

  • 150 g apple sauce

  • 1/4 cup canned apples, cut into 1 cm pieces

  • 2-3 tablespoons cinnamon sugar (you can add extra cinnamon sugar OR extra 1/4 cup brown sugar for more sweetness if preferred)

  • 1/4 cup icing sugar

  • 2 tablespoons almond milk

  • 2 tablespoons cream cheese, at room temperature

  • Crushed walnuts to top

METHOD

  1. Preheat the oven to 190C fan forced.

  2. After lightly dusting surface and rolling pin with plain flour, roll out pizza dough into a rectangle.

    • 400 g store-bought pizza dough at room temperature, plain flour

    • NOTE. the dough is much easier to work with and roll out when at room temperature

  3. Spread the apple sauce over the dough. Scatter over the cinnamon sugar and canned apple pieces.

    • 150 g apple sauce, 1/4 cup canned apple pieces, 2-3 tablespoons cinnamon sugar (extra cinnamon sugar or 1/4 cup brown sugar for added sweetness)

  4. Roll up the dough as tight as possible into a log, and then roll the log into a spiral. Place the dough onto a piece of baking paper before transferring to the Crumble Dutch oven.

    • NOTE. You can otherwise cut up the log into individual apple cinnamon rolls

  5. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the dough has cooked through. Remove the roll from the oven and set aside to cool for at least 10 minutes.

  6. Meanwhile, prepare the glaze. Stir the almond milk and icing sugar until the sugar has dissolved. Mix through the cream cheese until incorporated. Add more almond milk or cream cheese for desired consistency.

    • 1/4 cup icing sugar, 2 tablespoons almond milk, 2 tablespoons cream cheese

  7. Drizzle or spread the cream cheese glaze over the still-warm roll and top with walnuts. Cut into slices and serve immediately.

    • NOTE. The roll will keep for up to a week in an airtight container in the fridge - microwave before heating to soften the roll.

    Enjoy!
